My Dear Kitchen in Helsinki podcast is one year old today! On 17.8.2020, I shared the news and the first episode on Youtube and later published on Itunes and Spotify.

My aim in making this podcast is to create a network and database of food-related people and topics covered in Finland. I want to know who is working on which aspect of food in Finland. I want to discuss and understand Finland’s relationship with food and the challenges in tackling food sustainability and local food systems. I want to find communities that are self-organising and trying to form new ways of doing food systems. I want to investigate who is left behind by the food system and what we can do about it, and so on. Most importantly, we discuss all this in a free platform open to everyone to increase awareness about food issues, first and foremost in Finland and globally.

That first episode I mentioned earlier was the interview with Seona Candy, a post-doc researcher from the University of Helsinki (and my friend), about sustainable food systems. The sound quality was not that good, and you can clearly hear how nervous I was, but the content was good. In fact, I had uploaded the video on Youtube 4 days earlier, but I wanted to share the news on social on August 17th, which was a Monday. After that, Monday has been the publishing day of every episode.

Since then, I have published a total of 16 episodes: interviews with researchers, practitioners, activists and so on, all in Finland or somewhat related to Finland, all working on one aspect of food. We talked about topics ranging from food sovereignty and justice to migrant farmworkers, from insect-eating to food design.

After one month of summer pause, the podcast is soon back with new episodes. I will conduct the first episode of the season with Slow Food Helsinki later today. Another interview on vegetarian diets in Finland with a healthy sociology professor is also on the way. I am beyond excited; share this excitement with me!
